Every one of us has been brainwashed by 12 years at a government school (and often by another 4 years at a college whose curriculum government controls) - every bit as much as the Al Queda recruit has been brainwashed to expect instant paradise when he kills Americans and Jews.
So it's no surprise at all if we find the contents of this mini-site unfamiliar.
That "conditioning", that is daily reinforced by the government-licensed media after graduation, needs to be removed. There is a vast resource of freedom-oriented literature in place... virtually none of it on the shelves of government school libraries. So this will help you find it, and get a real education.
There's really no short cut. One cannot be effective in taking action - withdrawing support and spreading the word - without gaining a good understanding of one's aim. This is a war of ideas; the most powerful influence in history.
Next, while you're awaiting that, read a "fairy tale" called the The "G-Myth" which will in five minutes puncture the propaganda of a lifetime. And then bookmark the index of the 150+ articles in Jim Davies' series "On the Other Hand..." on-line and read those in whatever sequence and speed you wish. One with which you might well start is "A Necessary Evil?" and a trilogy examines the 9-11 attacks more closely than you have just read here.
After digesting a few of those your "Market for Liberty" will be delivered by Laissez-Faire, and with it a catalog through which you can browse and choose your next order. Good picks are "The Machinery of Freedom" by David Friedman - similar scope to the Tannehills' work, but rather more extensive from this Econ professor.
That catalog will make you feel like a kid in a candy store, and your own inclinations and interests will guide you best. Economics is a vital subject; there are many titles and perspectives there, but anything by Murray Rothbard is strongly recommended, starting perhaps with "For a New Liberty". In philosophy Ayn Rand is paramount, with her classic - and monumental - "Atlas Shrugged"; though it may be best to start on Rand with her delightful shorter work, "Anthem."
By no means last on your to-buy list should be George Orwell's classic, "1984". Orwell sadly died too young for his personal intellectual search to show him that humankind's key obstacle is government itself, not just its Communist or Fascist manifestations. But "1984" foretells with eerie precision what we now see all around us in America: a heavily regulated society with life punctuated by terror bombs in an endless war, fought for reasons long forgotten; with individuals spied upon by a malevolent government pretending to benevolence, every moment of their lives - with speech and all communications tracked and reported, thoughts controlled, and history continuously rewritten.
Won't all this book-buying cost money? Yes, of course. Your 12- or 16-year indoctrination program cost between $60,000 and $250,000, and undoing the damage caused will cost a few hundred a year. But consider the alternative!
One very long-running favorite is Ideas on Liberty put out by the Foundation for Economic Education of Irvington, NY (FEE.) Outstanding commentaries on current issues and events; FEE recently announced their new President is Mark Skousen, author of many fine books, Econ professor and publisher for many years of a successful investment-advice newsletter.
Another journal tested by time is Freedom Network News from the International Society for Individual Liberty (ISIL.) This is less a "think" magazine, more a diverse collection of reports of practical action for promoting personal freedom, taken all over the world; an entré to the community of freedom-lovers.
One that superbly stimulates thought is that of Lew Rockwell, the writer and economist. What the Press ought to be saying, but isn't.
Another excellent site is that of Ludwig von Mises Institute. Von Mises was the 20th Century economist who correctly predicted why the Soviet Union would collapse, 67 years before the event; and who towers intellectually above all the rest.
A recent arrival on the scene from Europe is anarchism.net - bright, well designed and uncompromising in its clarity of thought. And in the Fall of 2003, a compact "primer" on the subject was launched at TheAnarchistAlternative.info.
The clearest-thinking "mainstream" journalist in America is Vin Suprynowicz of the Las Vegas Review-Journal; here's a collection in his archive and a link to where you can get fresh articles delivered weekly.
